BKN BPA PBeM tournament
Round 2 match between Tom Thornsen (Allies) and Anthony Daw (Germans)
Allies start with 26 supply points
Initial landings:
US airborne troops sieze all four bridges into St. Mere Eglise. British sieze the bridge from Merville to Sword Beach. One fresh unit remains in each of the allied areas.
Allied bombardment is successful at flipping target unit on all beaches. At Sword beach both defending units are flipped. Air bombardment targets Grandcamp and Prot-en-Bessin, successfully flipping the CAs and the Flak unit in Grandcamp.
Utah: Two units attempt the
initial landing and both are disrupted by interdiction, rolling a
pair of 1's.
Omaha: All US units come ashore during the initial landing and
manage to inflict 2CPs, making the CA D1 while the artillery
retreats.
Gold: Three British infantry regiments clear the beach at
landing.
Juno: The three Canadian regiments land, but all go D1 when they
are outrolled 4:11.
Sword: The armor leads all 5 infantry units onto the beach,
driving the infantry away at D1 status and making the CA D2.
June 6th: 7 impulses (0-6)
Utah: The last regiment of
4th division makes it ashore and destroys the defenders on the
beach. The airborne units in St. Mere Eglise successfully fight
off German attempts at the magic bridge, but they did have to
"burn" the allied advantage after the second attempt
was successful. A third attempt by 729th regiment is denied when
allied air interdicts their movement in Valognes with a '1'.
Omaha: No further action by either side here, as the
entire US force is spent on the beach. Germans do not get an
artillery shot as the 352nd artillery retreated during the
landing.
Gold: 56th brigade is disrupted attempting to dislodge the
coastal artillery from Port-en-Bessin. 8th armor brigade follows
later in the day and overruns the coastal artillery in
Port-en-Bessin, then returns to Gold Beach and successfully
seizes the bridge to Bretteville without crossing.
Juno: Armor comes ashore and disrupts the coastal
artillery. German destroy the bridge to Bretteville.
Sword: The airborne in Merville attempts to clear both
Merville and Sword Beach, but only gets enough CPs to make the CA
in Merville D2.
June 7th: 7 impulses (0-6) Allies attacked from East to West, so we will report it that way.
Sword: British ETF bombards
Caen, leaving no fresh units there. British overrun the D2 CA
unit on the beach, 4SS moves to Merville and destroys the D2 CA
there while the armor leads three infantry units to deliever 7CPs
on the defenders in Caen. Germans hold on and send two armor
regiments as reinforcements into Caen. 12SS/12 successfully
avoiding interdiction to get there.
Juno: Armor overruns the D1 CA unit on the beach, then moves
through Gold beach to attack the Flak unit in Bretteville but is
repulsed and disrupted.
Gold: No action here, as the British conserve supply
waiting for the Americans to clear Omaha beach.
Omaha: Lots of action here, as the two regiments of 29th
division and the rangers overrun the D1 CA on the beach, then
eliminate the CA unit in Grandcamp. Germans now fail three
successive attempts to blow the bridge to Isigny, while the
allies bomb the two defenders there, missing with the air
bombardment, but leaving no fresh units after WTF bombardment.
Two regiments of 1st division assault and inflict 4CPs on the
defenders. German artillery then disrupts the spent US regiments.
Final action sees the Beach Approach box activated as the
artillery comes ashore and the last regiment of 29th division
attempts to clear Isigny, but only gets 1CP as the sun sets.
Utah: No action, as we wait for resupply of 4th division.
US command will shift the 90th
division from Utah to Omaha Beach approach in an attempt to
reinforce the near breakout there.
June 8th: 8 impulses (A-6)
Utah: Two regiments of 4th
division and the airborne cross the bridge into St. Mere Eglise
and roll high enough to eliminate CA/Martin. The Germans respond
with the "parastomp", sending everyone from Valognes
into Pont l'Abbe with artillery support in a 16:7 assault that
kills both defenders and garners a -2drm to the sunset die roll.
Both sides then wait for refit.
Omaha: 90th division comes ashore and moves to attack
Isigny, clearing out the last D2 defender. The Germans then blow
the bridge to St. Jean-de-Daye and reinforce St. Lo. US 29th
division decides not to risk the 7:8 attack on St. Lo and instead
crosses the bridge into Catz, overruning the D2 defender there.
With their last MP one regiment captures the bridge to St.
Jean-de-Daye. The Germans now run Lehr into the area to reinforce
and run into a hail of interdiction. A Flak unit makes it to
Balleroy, but one armor and one mech are spent in Caumont, while
another mech and armor unit are D1 in Aunay-sur-Odon. The US
forces conduct no further operations, while the Germans do manage
to blow the bridge between St. Lo and Isigny before the turn
ends.
Juno: The Canadian infantry fail in their attempt to
repair the bridge to Bretteville, so they assault over the river
at 10:5, rolling high enough to overrun the Flak defending. As
the assault over the river uses all their movement points, they
cannot attempt to sieze any bridges. The Germans respond by
immediately blowing all but one of the bridges out of
Bretteville.
Gold: Prior to the attack of the Canadians from Juno, both
the US and British air forces attempted bombardments of the
German infantry in Bayeux and both failed to hit. Following the
Canadian overrun of Bayeux the Gold beach force activates and
fails to repair the bridge to Bayeux. Rather then send the 50th
division over the river to assault Bayeux, the armor leads the
infantry into Bretteville and across the bridge into Tilly in an
11:11 assault. The initial assault eliminates the Flak defending
the area, but the German uses the advantage to re-roll the attack
and a stalemate results. The British remain in the area to
contest it.
Sword: With the day waning (the -2drm weighing on the
allied plans) the ETF bombards Caen rolling high enough to
'spend' all the defenders. The Germans send a mechanized regiment
from 12SS to reinforce, which makes it past through the
interdiction. This saves Caen as the British then follow with a
13:8 assault that inflicts 8CPs. 12SS now rushes three more
regiments to Caen, with two making it while an armor regiment is
disrupted in Bourguebous. With 12SS now committed to Caen, the
British 4SS regiment leads the airborne division out of Merville
to assault Troarn in an attempt to cut off Caen from Zone A
reinforcements. The 9:5 assault fails miserably and all four
attackers are disrupted, retreating back into Merville as the day
ends.
June 9th: 8 impulses (0-7)
Utah/Omaha: The Germans use
the overcast to move their zone 'E' reinforcements to the front.
WTF bombards Carentan and attrits both defenders. The German then
sends a couple more units into Carentan from St. Jores and both
sides call it a day on this front. All the rest of the action is
on the British fronts.
Gold/Juno/Sword: It's all about Caen this day. The British
decide to exploit the momentum gained there at the end of 8th to
see if they can clear the area. Three bombardments on impulses 0,
1 and 2 inflict only 6APs, enough to get the German to commit the
reserves in Bourguebus. 7th division then comes ashore from Sword
beach and clears Troarn to cut off the area 1 and zone 'A' units
from Caen. The 12SS artillery immediately responds to this and
disrupts the entire 7th division. Another British bombardment on
impulse 5 adds 5 more APs on Caen. Impulse 6 sees an assault by
51st division from the Juno Beach approach which puts 5CPs into
Caen and the weather changes. Impulse 7 sees 3rd division add
another 4CPs as the day ends.
While this is going on the German is pushing any fresh units he
can find into Caen. The three Flak units in zone "A"
move to zone 'B', where they can refit and then regroup nito
Potigny. The Flak from Houlgate reaches Caen before Troarn falls
and the SS corps artillery moves there as well.
June 10th: 9 impulses (0-8)
Gold/Juno/Sword: The
Germans start the day by sending flak units to reinforce Caen,
then bombard the British in Troarn, inflicting 7APs and
neutralizing them. The British start the day with bombardments of
Caen. The Germans absorb 8APs in Caen and send every fresh unit
that can get there. On impulse 2,with only 12 steps of Germans
remaining and no German reinforcements able to reach Caen, the
British attack at 18:7. They are outrolled by the German 4:7,
inflicting only 8CPs. Rather than leave 4CPs there for a follow
up attack the allies, in a fateful decision that probably decides
the game, return the advantage to the German and re-roll.
Disaster! The allies are outrolled 2:4! While this inflicts 9CPs
it also causes the weather to change to overcast, giving all
German units an additional MP with no interdiction. This allows
the German to immediately send the two units from Caumont to Caen
and make any British follow up attacks face heavy odds.
Utah/Omaha: Following the weather change and the exhausting
of British supply, the US forces go on the offensive off of Omaha
beach. Foret is bombarded, the bridge to Treveries is repaired
and the follow up assault overruns Treviers. The allies fail to
sieze the bridge to Bayeux, which is destroyed by the Germans.
The US forces then make three successive assaults on Foret,
inflicting a total of 9CPs on the defenders after the bocage
absorbs 3CPs. The weather changed back to clear on impulse 7, but
the 4 impulses of overcast allow the Germans to save Caen and
have increased supply this day. At the end of the daylight the
Germans have only 4 fresh units remaining in the center, but the
flanks are solid.
